The place to start now that the molds are cut seems to be building what they call a Strongback. That's a table stout enough to build the boat on that is also square and plumb enough to do computer controlled cranial megawatt laser micro surgery on.
This strongback is what the molds are mounted to while the strips get straped down. Which brings up the next challenge in this particular . . . Endeavor (I can't help myself!) According to everything I have read, the table is going to weight a bunch. Aside from the fact that I have limited space for this whole gizmo, at some point I'm sure I'm going to have to take the mountain to Mohamed (haul the boat to Michael so he can help bail me out). At this moment I honestly forget who said it, but either Suzanne or Michael suggested putting the table base up on saw-horses. From what I have seen - averaging three layers of three quarter inch plywood - that would be a weight savings of . . . about one full sheet of 3/4 inch plywood. This is a good thing, I think. Obviously it raises the question of whether any self respecting computer controlled cranial megawatt laser micro surgeon would work on saw horses or not, but what the heck. I'll take the chance. Update. Every good table needs it's own legs. I decided to go for it. If you are in a hurry to see them click HERE, otherwise you will see them pretty soon anyway. This is pretty interesting. It is an image of the center of the strongback. Obviously if the table has to be seventeen feet long two sheets of 8' long plywood are not going to do the job. A foot long splice had to be done somewhere and the center seemed like the logical place.
On the side of the strong back you can see the "unfilled" one foot wide gap. The wood you can see in that section is a four foot long splice. Think of it as a box inside a box. It is actually the strongest part of the table by far. |
